01 — The atelier

A townhouse, four chairs, and no hurry.

Atelier Ambre is on the first floor of a nineteenth-century townhouse in Príncipe Real, above a courtyard garden with an orange tree. There are four chairs and two treatment rooms, and we keep the diary small on purpose.

Every visit begins with mint tea and a talk in daylight. We colour by eye, steam skin the hammam way, and work with argan, rhassoul and orange-blossom water.

Hair colour, skin rituals and bridal work are what we do all week. Nothing else is on the menu, so each of them gets the time it needs.

A visit, hour by hour

  1. 0:00

    Mint tea

You arrive, leave your shoes by the door and drink tea in the courtyard.

  2. 0:15

    A talk in daylight

We look at your hair or skin by the window and agree what to do, and what to leave alone.

    The work

In the chair or in the room, with one person looking after you.

  4. 1:30

    Rinse and rest

Steam, a warm rinse, a glass of water. Nobody hurries you out.

  5. 2:00

    The door

Orange-blossom water on your wrists, and the next visit pencilled in if you like.

04 — The gallery

Light, tile, steam, hands.

Sixteen frames from the house: the upper room at four o’clock, the tiled fountain in the courtyard, and the work itself.
